SkinnyShirt gives you the look of a collared shirt without bunchiness and bulk by combining a stretchy knit body with a cotton poplin upper and collar. It’s the creation of Julie Kalimian, mom of four kids under 11 who missed feeling stylish and pulled together when traded her corporate media career for entrepreneurship.
Julie didn’t secure a deal when she appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank, but SkinnyShirt hit a nerve with fans of Deals & Steals where more than 1,000 orders were placed in just three hours as an online bonus offer for viewers.
Julie wrote to me the next day.
I have two full-time jobs: SkinnyShirt and full-time mom. I start work at SkinnyShirt at 7:30 when the kids get on the bus. I stop for a few hours to handle after school. I start back up on SkinnyShirt once the kids are in bed for the night.
Being a start up is wonderful, but presents challenges particularly when you are running a business and raising young kids.
I know a huge part of your message is about supporting and encouraging women in business. You really made a difference for SkinnyShirt and the response was overwhelming and crucial to our growth. Putting SkinnyShirt online on Deals & Steals was so important for the company. We were committed to making sure your fans were happy.
Sara Blakely of Spanx is the gold standard for success. My big dream would be for SkinnyShirt to grow and expand like Spanx!
